I had a car in my name I think in the year 2003,2004 I gave the car to a guy for scap metal and he said he was going to pay the towing fee well I filled out the dmv thing and did what it told me to do sent it off and everything then not to long after that I get a bill from Rickenbacker and it said I owed them money for the tow and storage (by the way this car had no engine it was only a frame with seats and a a steering wheel it wasn't even worth $50 and so I talk to the Rickenbacker and they said it was still in my name well here it is 2010 and it is still on my credit statement and they say I owe them at least $1,338.00 and I had talked to the dmv and they had said they think the car was destroyed I have no information on the car I don't even remember what kind of car it was supposed to be,what year,or model, or license number when I told them they shouldn't be charging me they told me every month you don't pay us your credit score will go down and I can't afford to go to the websites to check my credit for free to see whats new I do not have a credit card so I can not check my credit because I I can't find a credit report website that will check your credit without check or credit card and that sucks but the Rickenbacker group basically threaten me saying if I don't pay they will ruin my credit so I would like to know how do I fix this without paying because I found out this is a fraudulent company please help me thanks

Your dilemma is not uncommon, however; there is an opportunity for resolution.
The first and foremost recommendation would be to send a letter to Rickenbacker Collection Services describing what you just explained in your review. Upon receipt of the letter, it is Rickenbacker policy to investigate the information of the account, provide you with debt verification and notify the credit reporting agencies that the account is disputed.
Rickenbacker will respond in writing either requesting additional information to further the investigation or to notify you the results of the investigation.
You may also contact a representative to explain that you sold the vehicle prior to the tow date and the representative will instruct you on how to dispute the debt.
In either event, it is very difficult to show that you transferred the vehicle to another party without having some record that the transfer took place. When the vehicle was towed by our client, the Department of Motor Vehicles and/or Licensing indicated that you were the last party to have possession of the vehicle at the time of tow. This is why you were place in collections.
If you sold the vehicle prior to the tow date, there are remedies to removing you from the collection item. Without knowing the account number, I am unable to research the details of your account.
Rickenbacker is a legitimate business practicing collections nationwide for over 20 years.
